Thanks to
macbeemer I did a meme! WOO Its below the cut. ;D Besty asked questions that made me become long winded. BEWARE!
• Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
• I'll respond to the comment by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions (If anyone has questions for me, I'll answer those!)
1. Of all the shows you've done, which body of work are you most proud of?
Unfortunately there's not many shows outside of gradschool that I'm particularly proud of (Yay Burn out!). I also tend to be over critical of my work. But I do have a few I'm proud of.
1-Saturday Night.- Okay this show was a COMPLETE nightmare to work on simply because of overwhemling outside factors (rough start of the semester, advisors who wouldn't advise, relationship issues) plus it not being the usual flash and wacky musical/children's production I usually did. But I did hunker down and scooted arcoss the floor and got this sucker done. Looking back at it now, I really think its some of my best work. I felt I really captured the feel of 1929 in the show, created a harmonious design will both the set and lighting designers, not to mention created some great looks that helped the actors develop characters that were otherwise completely bland. The script is horrible and the music as dull (Sondheim's first show EVER), but I think the design team on this one nailed it and created something visually exciting. I won't best costume design for the year which shocked me. Pictures here
2-Taming of the Shew-A no brainer decision. It was my thesis show and it was FULL of juicy twists I couls sink my teeth into (Cross gender cast, No period requirements, improvised garments, etc.). It came after a very rough second semester and by the time this show was dropped in my lap I had a "fuck it all" attitude, I was ready to kick some ass, and I was also ready to show everyone at school that I was one the their best and brightest. I used a insane color palette and many unconventional items to build the show. Most of the time I was found in the back room speed dressing the dress forms, muttering to myself, tearing things down, then dressing them again. It was manic...and hilarious. But the show looked great. I got almost all my visual gags in, had a great working relationship with the director, and really busted out a show I felt represented me as a designer. It was my third best costume design award I won. I plan to upload a PDF of my thesis soon if anyone wants to read it. Pictures here.
3-The Wiz- I'm begining to notice that most of the shows I'm proud of are the shows that were probably the most nightmareish to work on. I was stuck with an ego driven director who was the biggest pain in the ass in the world and a really short time line to build over 200 costumes for a cast of about 50. The director wanted us to build the whole thing. I remember being in that shop from 8am every morning until about 10pm every night, seven days a week. But what resulted was a LOT of creativity coming out of me. I really latched onto the whole SciFi style the director wanted and went full force with it. I won the National Youth Theater Award for best costume. Pictures here.
4- Aladdin- You'd think I'd learn my lesson from The Wiz about working with a crazy director. Nope. I went back and work with him again. But apparently working with crazy people is my thing. I donno. I wanted this production to be very lavish and rich. I also wanted to be really true to the source material (Disney's Aladdin). I managed to find some lush fabrics to use and made sure to add lots of little details to the costumes to create a lot of visual interest for a very cartoony look (I also found Jafar's trim at an SCA event and now I have some of my own. HEE!). The result was something I felt excelled past the normal children's theater fair and looked like a true production. Unfortunately no one came to see this show which was a shame. The kids were extremely talented and the show itself was very entertaining. Pictures here.
2. If you hadn't been born in this era, which one do you think would have suited you best?
...I never thought about this. Contrary to popular belief, I would really not want to be alive during the Renaissance or Medival period. I think it would be pretty miserable actually. Well at least for a woman...though I would look FABULOUS. I mean the clothing..THE CLOTHING! I think I would have love to have seen the early 1960's simply because so much history was made during that time...that and the fashion was delicious and curvy women were still considered hot.;)
If not then, then probably the 1930's or 40's. Once again for the history and fashion.
3. How did you get involved in the SCA? What do you like most about it?
I remember
karine telling me about how she became involved with the SCA up in Montreal while I was in grad school. I really love the medieval and Renaissance periods especially in costuming...der. Yeah...I'm predictable. But during school I was too busy to do anything outside of school. That and well, people in the SCA I met in the past were...creepy. So I stayed away Yeah.
Anyways, graduation came about and I really needed an outlet to meet people. I wasn't very close to anyone I went to school with save for one person and she was moving away for work. And while I was cosplaying and meeting awesome people there, I definitely did not make money to go to cons and cosplay so that wasn't much of a social outlet for me. Also, my gargs friends lived too far for me to hang out with them all the time. So after Shrew opened, I looked up some information on the SCA on the interwebs. I managed to figure out which Kingdom and Barony I was living in and ended up contacting Max (this is how we first met...which is its own wacky story on its own) and going to a new comers meeting. Now THIS is where I kinda lucked out. I never went through the "fringy" period that SCA people refer to. Fringy meaning groups who only go to wars, party, don't do arts, service, or really participate in any sort of SCA activities other than drinking and getting nekkid...which actually isn't an offical SCA activity . And actually, If I was introduced to the SCA that way, chances are I'd probably not have stuck around. I have nothing against people who party but I was looking for something else. Since Max was a part of Iron Maiden and Maiden was pretty heavily involved in the barony at the time...and still is because apparently we're a bunch of suckers...I ended up joining the crew getting thrust right in the middle of activity center. So I got an upclose and personal education. I felt it was worth it. I stuck around and its become my primary hobby and really rewarding in both the friendship and creativity areas of my life...and I met my husband so I can't really complain about that.;)
As for what I like best, you'd THINK it would be the costuming...well yeah that's a huge part of why I became involved and also a huge part of what I love to do in the SCA. But the artisan stuff in general has become an aspect of the SCA that I love and attatched myself to. I love making garb, doing illumination, learning about embroidery, etc etc...I'm hardly an expert in any of this but I really love to learn! So yeah, that's a huge part. I also love the whole pagentry of it all...which can also be a really boring part to some...well...many. But I do love watching people process in for court, getting their awards, I love seeing how the heralds work, the banners, all that crap? Yeah, I'm a total sucker for that. And yeah, court can be pretty boring (though it has gotten more interesting now that I'm on court instead of just watching) but I do get pretty swept away by the whole event. Its a form of escapisim for me. Dress up and pretend taken to an adult level. But the main thing I love is all the amazing people I've met since joining the SCA. I don't use the term family lightly. Its a term only reseved for my actual family and the people who I feel the closest to. But since joining the SCA, the Iron Maiden has become my family while my own is far away from me. Not only have they provided that family, but they also have accepted dear friends of mine like Jen, Trish, Stacy, and Chelle and has even accepted a few into the fold (Jen and Trish mainly...To their peril!) My household has made living in San Diego a great thing. While in the past I have considered moving back North after school, I have now settled down here and I feel content instead of lonely like I was during gradschool. Also its wonderful to be able to step into a room full of nerds like you. Despite the vast personalities, everyone you go to an SCA event with are big history nerds and we're all sharing our passion for it all....that and No one looks twice at you for dressing up and playing pretend for a while. Its fun to not have to conform for a day.
4. Which five people, living or dead, fictional or nonfictional, would you invite to your dinner party? What would you guys discuss?
Oh crap, this isn't easy...Well Mel Brooks is one for sure, mostly for Max because he really loves the man, Julie Taymore and Baz Luhrmann mostly because I want to know what goes on in their heads, Queen Elizabeth I...It sounds dorky yes but the woman facinates me, and...Oh hell I donno. I'm sure there's someone famous out there to invite but the only person who I think would work in this senario is Max's dad Fred. That man has a ton of history under his belt and is extremely facinating...and warped. I suppose we'd discuss the arts and political climates...but it would all end up degrading down into movie, play and gamer talk eventually I'm sure.
5. It's a dark and stormy night. There's a knock at your door, and when you open it, lo and behold, it's Han Solo and Indiana Jones. You're only allowed to let one stay that night, and only that night. Who do you invite in?
No brainer. Sorry Han but Indy is my man and forever will be my man. He has a hat and a whip an eduation...and pretty much all my hormones in his back pocket. I've had a crush on that fictional fellow since I was 12 years old.
In other news, Winter Arts was really fun! I had a good time displaying and even won some baubles for my work. I showed my orange Ren, Max's blue and silver Cassock, some Kimehimo braids, and my tankard cover I made. I also made another pumpkin pie which was devourered very quickly. At the event I managed to find someone to teach me beginner blackwork....now all I want to do is learn more so I can put blackwork on my chemises and Max's shirts...This could be deadly. I was really inspired by all the work I saw there and now I'm really wanting to get back to illumination and do some more garb research for garb...and black work. NEW ADDICTION!I will probably steal some photos from Anvenel and Lou and post a pic of my viking garb up in
costumenonsense soon. BTW, Trish? Christal? Someone put their scary murder dolls on view and made some cool norman period garb for them. I totally geeked out and got to meet the girls who owned them. NERD AM I!!
On Friday I not only managed to clean out most of garage (GO ME) I also planted clover and my wild flower seeds for the front yard as well as weed the herb garden and my snap dragons. I also put up the cute little iron fence PJ left me as well as some solar lights to light the walk way up to the front door. The front yard is slowly starting to take shape. Hopefully in the new year I can get the Chateau de Nom Nom sign painted for the front door and This for our front yard....and my dorky girly side wants to get one of these too... But I'm really happy so far with how the front yard is coming along. It looks like one of the old succulents in the front is going to pot so I think I'm going to remove it soon and replace it with someing more floral. I haven't desided what yet.
Max and I made make our way out to pick up a tree for the Chateau de Nom Nom tonight. I'm itching to put up the Christmas decoration. We have a wreath on the door already and hopefully this week we'll get our icicle lights up around the house. HEE! I also want to pick up some oranges and cloves so I can put a bowl of them out in the living room. They always make the room smell so dang good!
If not that I may chill on the couch and try to finish up the first season of The Tudors. Only have two eps left.
